Well, preparations well underway, HB3 off to Gosport tomorrow with Scott Kaczor. Plenty of work done by Big Nige Theadom at Rig Magic and Josh and team at Suffolk Yacht Harbour, so should be in good condition. The team (Jason, Judy, Tim, Sue, Ash, J2, Matt, Tom, Clive, Nic, John, Chris and Jackie G) with […]
HB3 now resprayed and anti-fouled – without mast and in the water. Hoping to see some of the Team on March 1st!
Des Purcell currently delivering HB3 to Gosport for the RORC Cherbourg Race on 5th September. Currently holed up in Dover in abysmal conditions with a good chance the boat won’t get there. We are keeping our fingers crossed.
30 mile race with 10-14 knot eastery and foul tide beat out to Swin Spitway and South Whitaker with a foul tide downwind return to the Royal Corinthian line pursuing Oystercatcher XXVI all the way. Pretty immaculate race for HB3 with Denis on bow, guests Sue Pelling and Sarah Watson, with Jason Foxhall masting gave […]
And it was going so well till we got into the Crouch. Variable, fluky and light airs which we didn’t get to grips with resulted in us throwing the race to a very well-deserved, well-sailed Jedi Knight. A very pleasant evening in the Burnham Thai with Jedi Knight and the Holding Pattern team led to […]
Well – things have been looking up a bit lately. A very bouncy trip in the second half of the race won us the Beadle’s Cup from Burnham to Ramsgate, with some boats having 45 knot gusts across the deck. Glorious sunny day with about 15 knots initially with guest crew Trevor Southey and Richard […]
Today HB3 is ambling gently up the Orwell from Ipswich Haven to Shotley Marina where (it is hoped) structural damage will be repaired and HB3 will be ready for East Coast Race, Cannonball Trophy and EAORA Week. She’ll then come back for a bit of Botox and filler before the next races of the season.
NORTH SEA RACE 2008 – Protest Committee Findings PROTEST, CHECKMATE v HEARTBEAT 3 of BURNHAM “…we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses…” (Epistle to the Hebrews, 12:1, adopted by Dorothy Sayers, the English crime-fiction writer as ‘Clouds of Witness’, the title of her 1926 detective novel in which the problem […]
All psyched up and looking forward to a terrific North Sea Race with a big international fleet when BANG! – big start line incident. Heartbeat 3 T-bones Checkmate, a Dutch Swan 45. Both boats unable to continue. Huge disappointment. HB3 now (whilst undergoing repair) is unable to do De Guingand, Myth of Malham and the […]
Off to Levington – nice trip – aground on Horse Shoal at Burnham 10 minutes into passage. Otherwise pleasant uneventful 4.5 h motorsail. Sails measured by Pedro Cockayne. Water discharge into bilge solved – leaking water hose. Dave Nicholls replaced lifelines in previous week. Look all set for North Sea next Friday
First two races – Ralph Herring Trophy and Pattinson Cup – great weather – blustery day 1 – a few cobwebs blown away by a couple of broaches – but fantastic trip to West Mersea. Class 2 and 3 excelled both days overall. HB3 1st Class 1 on Saturday and Sunday. Good start to season […]
Day 2 – Friday 10th – beautiful day. Prep team (now with Chris A, Dani and Ed) split into three. A) Chris and Ed – modified vang, sorted rigging and lifelines, B)Judy, Grace, Chris, Dani and Jacqui – perishable provision shopping and C) Jason – to Cowes to register at the RORC Office – all […]
Further prep work being undertaken – Roger, Harry and Zup and Tim have stripped winches. Tim slightly distracted when pressure cooker seal exploded. Pasta shells now available on coach roof ceiling for snacks when hungry. Awaiting divers to scrub hull and then off to Cowes for race briefing. Biggest concern for fleet at the moment […]
……..and just as signing off at 0042h pick up this message from RORC! ‘The RORC has noted and is concerned about the severe weather warnings issued by the UK Met Office at 1208 on Friday 10 August 2007. The first start for the Rolex Fastnet Race is planned for 1000 on Sunday 12 August. However […]
First day – 9th August. First half of prep team (Jason, Judy, Jacquie, Grace and Chris G) arrive late afternoon. Boat stripped and provisioned. Met Ian and Trevor who’d arrived from Haven Ports with Skipjack (Ker 11.3)having got a place on the race! Told us they would beat us. That’s as maybe but we got […]
Most of us off this weekend to Oostende for the East Anglian Prizegiving on Saturday 20th. Should be a good weekend – what with the England-South Africa match the same evening. Look forward to seeing as many of the HB3 team there as possible.
Well what a result! HB 3 wins EAORA overall for 2007. All on the last race with everyone aware that a number could win. Despite coming 4th, behind Oystercatcher XXVI, Skipjack and Ding Dong it was enough to give a 2 point lead over Paul Drew’s Harvest Moon, which itself sailed a storming Buckley Goblets. […]
Very good article on Fastnet with many top sailors quoted. Worth buying and framing!
